Lina Cornejo, Singer... Calls Elizabeth Home
Lina Cornejo's odyssey from Cali, Colombia, to her current status as a flourishing artist and singer in Elizabeth, New Jersey, is a narrative steeped in resilience, passion, and the transformative power of music.
As a child in Colombia, her mother discovered her talent and despite facing rejection from music schools due to her young age, her mother persisted, securing her a spot at the prestigious Universidad del Valle when Lina was merely seven years of age. For nine formative years, Lina immersed herself in the world of music, refining her vocal craft and musical grammar.
However, life takes unexpected turns, and Lina had to step away from her music, making a move to the USA. While navigating the challenges of a new country, Lina worked at three jobs for four years, driven by the desire to reunite with her family in Colombia, but in Elizabeth, she found solace—a city resonating with her Colombian roots, a place she fondly describes as cozy, permeated with the familiar scent of Pan de Bono. Elmora and Morris Avenues became the backdrop for Lina's last 16 years in Elizabeth, weaving her into the fabric of the city's
cultural tapestry.
It was during a trip to Colombia in 2021 that overwhelming encouragement and support propelled her onto a Colombian stage for her first solo performance. There she discovered an undeniable connection with her audience and a newfound sense of purpose. Returning to the USA, Lina resolved to pursue a career in music, her husband fully supportive. Despite uncertainties during the pandemic, her husband's employment at APM Terminals provided much-needed stability.
Since her official debut in 2021, Lina's name reverberates with positivity in Elizabeth and beyond, with eager anticipation for “El Show de Lina Cornejo.” For Lina, singing is more than a profession; it's her therapy. The warmth and connection with her audience fuel her spirit, keeping her grounded and humble. As an immigrant who once grappled with English, Lina sees her triumph as a testament to her hard work of attaining the American Dream as a new icon for Elizabeth. She attributes her success to her husband and her collaborations with restaurants in Elizabeth, especially Mexology, offering her a stage to showcase her talent every Friday. Her daughter, serving in the United States Navy, and stepson, in the United States Air Force, stand as living proof of sacrifices made for dreams. This is truly symbolic and serves as an example of their family giving back to our community and country. Her gratitude extends not only to her family but also to the welcoming and supportive community she has come to love, proudly calling
Elizabeth home.
