The History Behind the Ritz Theatre
Constructed on the grounds of the 1865 Drake Opera House, the theater was bought in 1925 by Jacob Fabian and was designed by architect Fred Wesley Wentworth. The Ritz Theatre opened in 1926, welcoming visitors with a capacity of more than 2,800 seats. The theater entered a new era of change in the 1940s, when ownership was given to the Warner Bros. Circuit Management Corps.
In the 1980s, the Ritz Theater faced potential demolition, but it was bought by philanthropists who intended to save the facility. The philanthropists did not have sufficient funds for the project, and in 1994, the space was bought by George Castro. The theater has since maintained its elegant interiors while featuring a variety of popular acts and musicians.
